Abstract

The occasion for this text is the death of Clifford Geertz, one of the great authors in anthropology of the 20th century, whose work was based on the fieldwork tradition of Anglo-American cultural anthropology. The story of his life, scholarly career and work reflects the socio-cultural context of postwar anthropology in the United States and some of the theoretical and methodological movements that started in mid-20th century, under the influence of philosophy, sociology, literary criticism and other disciplines. The most important characteristics were the redefinition of diffuse anthropological subject (delimitation and cognitive definition of culture) in the 1950s, and the turn towards symbolic and interpretive anthropology in academic centers such as Harvard and Chicago, in the 1960s.
