The Origins of Early Statehood in Southern Mesopotamia: From the Fourth to the Second Millennium BC
Keywords:

The paper focuses on reconstructing the origins of the earliest states in the ancient Sumerian region, drawing on relevant texts from Sumerology and Assyriology. It traces their development by examining key forms of statehood. An overview of the early states in Southern Mesopotamia (Sumer, Akkad, Babylon) highlights the cultural and material conditions that shaped the complexity of human societies. These factors led to the emergence of social hierarchies, the professionalization of labor, resource accumulation, societal stratification, and the formation of both priestly and secular authorities. Additionally, this period saw numerous cultural innovations that were crucial in transitioning humanity from prehistory to history, including urbanization, the invention of the pottery wheel, advancements in mathematics and geometry, the foundations of monumental architecture and trade, and, most importantly, the development of writing.
