RESTUDIES IN ANTHROPOLOGY: VAN BEEK VS. GRIAULE

Within the context of historical research on the theoretical and methodological range of 20th century anthropology, this text questions Walter van Beek’s restudy study of the Dogon culture compared to the preceding research carried out by Marcel Griaule. Besides being a rarely good example of conceptual polarization of realism and anti-realism in anthropology, repeated studies contain significant heuristic and didactic functions. Introducing future researchers to the meaning and genesis of differences in analysis of the same cultural phenomena may enable anthropological methodology to revitalize the strategy that once rendered it interesting for other disciplines. This strategy is the problematization of wider theoretical and methodological contexts of the production and application of knowledge, combined with the focus on particular ethnographic contexts.
