SPORT AND NATIONAL IDENTITY. SOCCER STORY OF THE "NONEXISTENT" NATION

This paper represents an analysis of the sports commentaries in Serbian newspapers, whose focus is on narratives concerning the cultural concept of national identity. My intention was to demonstrate the ways in which print media simultaneously represent and construct cultural messages and systems that are connected to this concept. Two examples are analyzed here: the qualifying match played between the national team of Serbia and Montenegro and that of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the first game of the national team of Serbia against the Czech national team.
