Abstract

Events in the physical, biological, and social world are packed with information. Although they are sometimes insignificant, they are often extremely important for each living being, especially in crisis situations in which the survival of individuals, entire communities or species is threatened. This article focuses on the nature and role of information in our human environment and aims to: (i) draw a distinction between colloquial and theoretical, epistemologically relevant uses of the term „information”; (ii) clarify the connection between the concepts of information and knowledge; and (iii) show why, from the point of view of the cognitive and practical benefit we can derive from them, it is important that the information comes from reliable sources.
