Olga Benson’s Painting Collection as a „space of encounter“ of scientists and artists

The paper discusses the nature and quality of the relationship between science and art on the example of the collection of drawings and paintings of the painter Olga Benson, who was employed as a folklore painter at the Ethnographic Institute SAS in the period from 1947 to 1950. Through two “meetings” of scientists and artists of different profiles – the first from the end of the 1940s, when a Russian academic painter was sent to the fieldwork (and “to the people”) with the first anthropogeographic and ethnographic research teams of the Ethnographic Institute SAN, and again gathering of anthropologists, conservators-restorers and scenographers (professionally engaged in the Ethnographic Institute of SASA and the Faculty of Applied Arts of the University of Arts
in Belgrade), almost 70 years later around the joint project “Dreams of the Past and Tradition – Olga Benson”, we hint at the necessity of overlapping, joining and intertwining of science and art in order to protect and present the (in)tangible cultural heritage.
