Abstract

This paper is part of a broader study on Serbian migration to Tasmania, a state of Australia. It is based on field research conducted in 2020 in Hobart, which included on the one hand thirty first-generation immigrant respondents, and on the other, relevant literature and available statistical data. The aim of this text is to offer a general historical and ethnographic overview of the waves of Serbian settlement on the continent and the island, the reasons for migration, and the motivations for choosing – or not choosing – this particular place for settlement. Although ethnography is no longer at the center of anthropology as a discipline, the exception made in this paper is justified by the fact that Australia, and especially Tasmania, due to its geographical remoteness from the Balkans and its lack of cultural influence on Serbian society, has remained relatively unknown in the local context. Moreover, domestic anthropological production, which has yielded numerous and significant results in the study of Serbian diasporas in European and, less frequently, other overseas countries, has so far shown little interest in or had the opportunity to focus attention on this particular destination of Serbian emigration.
