Abstract

Following Grice’s idea that communication is an intentional human activity aimed at establishing a relationship with other persons, it is logical to assume that the appropriate use of language plays a key role in attaining that goal. Utterances possess a certain ethical and psycho-social component, as well as meaning and function – this means that their formulation is not only dependent on the communication intentions of the speaker, but on different extra-lingual circumstances having to do with the institutional context and the identities of the participants in the communication act. This paper gives an overview of socio-pragmatic theories dealing with interpersonal aspects of communication, and, hence, considers two key concepts: politeness as one of the basic conditions of man’s verbal interaction, and indirect speaking acts as a discursive strategy aimed at its realization.
